This fall, the lovely and talented Becky Parker invited me to join her for an interview on Briar Haus Writes, a video series focused on writers and writing. In this interview, I share early life influences on my writing and discuss my poetry journey. Those undecided about adding form to a free-verse repertoire may enjoy the section on the benefits of form poetry. I discuss my commitment to poetry community through the lens of my role as Poetry Society of Tennessee president, and the importance of bringing its mission to life. Toward the end, you can hear a couple of my poems and what motivated me to add performance to page work.
(FACT CHECK: Oops! I misspoke. I spent 6 weeks in that hotel in Germany, not 6 months.)
About Poetry Society of Tennessee
The Poetry Society of Tennessee (PST) is a non-profit organization founded by poets for poets in 1953 and a member of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. For more than 70 years, PST has welcomed poets and poetry lovers from across Tennessee and beyond into an inclusive, supportive community with plenty of hands-on opportunities to learn, grow, and appreciate the art and craft of poetry. Activities range from educational programs, workshops and critique sessions to readings, contests, publications, and a poetry festival. Membership is open to adults of all ages. For more information, visit www.poetrytennessee.org.
As President, I have the opportunity to serve this poetically minded organization and work and commune with some amazing poets who are also wonderful human beings. I’m ever grateful to all of the volunteers and active members for making this vibrant community come to life.
